For many of Facebook's 8-million plus student users, it was too much. Within 24 hours, hundreds of thousands of students nationwide organized themselves to protest the new feature. Ironically, they're using Facebook to do it.

So our collective voice is certainly going noticed. What's more funny is to think of how the writers at time found out about this collective protest. Some recent collegiate was bored, at his news-desk surfing facebook. He notices that suddenly facebook has severely changed. not only has it changed, but also there are literally hundreds of protest groups. So, this facebook addict goes to his manager with what suddenly becomes a brilliant idea. Why don't we write a story on the gen-y protest against facebook. Chances are we won't be called gen-y for long. Time's new coining of the term "generation facebook" is likely to catch. As the fervor of the protest goes, so also does the new name.

In other news, I've recently started two facebook groups to protest the change myself. My wife helped me coin the name for an as-yet-unformed group called "I got stalked on facebook, so I went to myspace and got an STD."

For once, just pick a car

Yes, there is a softer side. I'm a car-guy. My wife is a car-guy's wife turned car-woman. Which is pretty awesome considering she now talks with me about cars. But I emphasize with George here. He's done so many great things in his own way, but cars are just not on his radar. I think, at times, I make the mistake of believing the characters are real. When I watch, I evaluate as if the show were real, as if the events happening were really happening. When someone dies, I really feel like they died, not like their part in the show is over for the episode. I know its strange and un-guyish and un-car-guyish but there it is. I don't even experience the fullness of the show. I often have to be reminded that the way the doctors treat their patients paralells the way the doctors treat each other. But come hell or high water, on thursday nights, I'm there in front of the screen waiting breathlessly for another hour with my surgeon friends.

But today's Friday and the countdown is reset until my wife and I sit in again on the lives of those in SGH. Whilst I'm at it I may participate. If I have to choose, and choose I will, I would take the euro-spec 7-series with the manual transmission. Something about the ultimate driving machine that just doesn't mix well with "automatic"

WARNING: Personal Injury May Occur

Look at this nice, sedan? Comes with the F1 flappy paddle shifters that can be set to either automatic or manual. The car I've been looking for. This is a V-10 sports car with electric motor piggybacked for exra performance and fuel economy. Sub 7 0-60 mph and >40 mpg. I'm just concerned with the size of this car and the technological innovation capabilities of the Brits. But with the "ultra-compact, 2110cc V10" under the hood and the electric motor attached at the wheels, this car looks to be actually cutting edge.

The more I look at this car, the more I like it. We don't go out and all buy Priuses thats for sure (or is it Priusi). But eventually, the sub 10 mpg of the new Ford GT and other high profile sports cars may just prove the high price tag far to high after counting the cost of fuel. For the well endowed, this makes no matter. They buy these cares because they can and ultimately, can also afford the fuel and upkeep.
But what about the enthusiast? Even reasonably priced sports cars have kept moderate to moderately low mpg ratings. And yet, with cars like the Prius establishing new niches in the ultra-green market, no sports cars have capitalized on this concept. This is where the ideas are looking dry. What sports car manufacturers ought to be doing is innovating engine technology like their low-power counterparts. Honda has begun to take on this idea. They've unvelied a version of their v-6 engine with a hybrid attached. They've put it in the sleepy Accord Sedan, making a coke-intoxicated sedan that's light on the gas belt at the same time. Lexus has also incorporated electric motor add-ons to their cars as well.
What should be the goal then? Performance through this sort of innovation. Reviews have looked down upon cars like the Accord Hybrid, but I think they miss the point. The Accord Hybrid not only gets decent mileage, but its a rocket in its own right. This car has the right idea. And we should see more of this. As an enthusiast, I want my mpg to match 1/10th of my horsepower. And this goal is reasonable I think. Take some of these ~300 bhp sedans for sale by those German luxo makers. Instead of adding the displacement or larger turbo, put one of those newfandangled electric motors on the rear wheels and add 60 hp at the wheels. Then, there would be an added bonus for the S/M/AMG version: better fuel economy. Imagine that. With just a little more technological effort, these sport models could soon become the most friendly models. All without a sacrifice in performance.

So, what would the new motto be for this enthusiast movement:
"You've got to pay the price of admission to get in the door, but now you can save a pinch on the ride home."

That's what I'm waiting for. But then, I don't want to arrive at work or that evening drink looking like a dunk either. So what do I buy? What car should I get that will satisfy both my performance desires and my spatial needs with my kids. Furthermore, if I take my wife out for a nice saturday drive, or a friday evening jaunt on the town while we hire a babysitter, will said car make the mood.

Well today I present to you the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Get the AMG trim and you've got a verifiable rocket under the hood. This car is not small, I saw one myself about a month ago and confused it with an S-series. Turns out this is the S-Series for the self-conscious. Not wanting to look stuffy or "old," the CLS is sport, large, and luxury. So I can take the kids to school, with 4 seats (therefore assuming I only have three school aged kids) and after work I can go out for drinks and potential clients will squirm with delight over just what quality service they'll get with guys like me driving cars like that. Finally, this car has four doors, which automatically fits my wife's definition of good looking car, and then its shaped like a coupe which fits my definition of fun to drive. Not cheap, I can only hypothetically own one of these cars for the next few years. But once I can, this is top on my list of cars I'd like to drive every day. Now only if other manufacturers would pick up on the uber-lux-coupe-with-space concept and then I'll have some good old capitalistic choice.

Video: Awesome Boating Fun

Thanks to the wonders of YouTube for this wonderful video. So all the kids [cool] had one and I really wanted one. After a brief stint with a Honda C-RV [read hand-me-down from mom], We finally made our way to the CarMax and I picked out an Integra from the likes of Civics, Jettas and ugly Saturns. It drove exactly like I wanted it to; it was a manual transmission with a fancy looking shift-knob [read standard but nicer than my dad's Accord]; and it had some umph. I enjoyed this car. Soon after the day I got it, I took two of my friends out for a drive and promptly ate up all the gas that little tank could hold. I seem to remember that being an ineresting day. One of my friends sat in the back seat and I opened up my nice new sunroof. Under some springtime trees, a few errant seeds bombed the back seat. Those of us in the front just kept enjoying the ride. And boy what a ride. My car left me with a couple complaints in the end, though.

Problem was, something destroyed the suspension. The bottom of the suspension was lower than the ground and the bottom of the car. On curvy country roads [my absolute favorite] going over a slight hill, the front end would scrape. The faster I travelled, the more likely this was to happen. Never a very comfortable feeling. Furthermore, I noticed this on that first drive with friends, a sure embarassment. I should have kept that car, though. It ate rotors like breakfast, but that may have been a mechanic problem. Somewhere within two months after the final brake/tire job [which was supposed to actually fix the car's issues] I decided I was tired of the old Integra and went out for that classic BMW 2002. Cool car, yes, but such a silly, misguided choice.

My mental resolution? Buy the TSX. Too bad my high school years focused on what was "cool" and not the timeless looks of the mid-nineties Integra and its beautiful drive. But now, I like more torque, more posh and lighning 0-60 times. Will I buy the TSX anytime soon? No. But the timeless lesson of a good drive on the country road still weighs heavily on my mind as I think again about cars. Its not what makes the pedestrian go "wow" that I really should concern myself with. Rather, what I truly enjoy to spend hard-earned time with on the way to work and on the way to play. Will I buy my next car based on the story or showroom? No. I'll be listening to the engine, gauging my comfort level in the car, and measuring the acceleration by the pounding in my chest as I go thundering down a countryside road just so that I'll know what car is ... well, Me.

I Hate Finals prt. 2

Friday's a day away but freedom doesn't come until stupid monday. Some medication, ala Top Gear. What a great show! And while we're at it lets talk about cars to testdrive 2006 edition:
Audi A3
Audi S4
BMW X5

Hopefully I'll get some time this week to break from studying and go test the Audis. I'm really sold on them as coming up in the lux market and yet being small enough (as a company) to still have to make reliable cars. The problem with Merc and Bimmer is that both of these companies have gained worldwide popularity and have subsequently gone down in build quality.

Bimmer's lost their mind it seems, and noone is stopping to not buy their cars. So let me be the last (in a long line) to say that anything newer than '03 isn't for me or my family. I like Mercedes, but their cars have had lower and lower mechanical reliability for like the past 8 years, so there's no reason to go hunting for a car destined to break down now.

Before breaking into the premium segment, Audi learned this lesson 20 years ago. With their cars in the '80s they garnered a reputation for poor build, worse drives and dangerous cars. Fighting from that point, they've had to re-build a reputation of reliability and safety just so consumers would consider their cars.

Flash foward to today, and Audi is now a competing luxury carmaker with a few years of reliability under their belt. Which frees them to make what they truly know how to make: The 4wd sports sedan. The new S4, with a big V8 stuffed under the hood shows just how this works. Instead of sticking with a turbo V6, they jumped into the uber-segment with a car that really kicks you in the a**. Of course, they should import the RS4 to the states and let us experience all those extra horses, but they won't. Stupid emmissions regulations...

So with that, I make my case that the best mass-market lux maker out there today is Audi, whose reputation is just starting to precede the name and who's cars are finally letting their hair down and really getting down to business. B and M, you've got work to do, so get working! Now @$^%&!

Woohoo First Reader!

So like any new blogguette, I've been very interested in my readership. And today, in a moment of boredom, I checked the ticker, and I had a visit for 2 minutes! That's 2 Minutes! Which means (to me) that he read through my previous posts. What a wonderful feeling. I'm quite happy with that.

In other news, people on the radio today talked about Road Rage. They were suprised that the Washington DC area is high in road rage. Funny. I was thinking that road rage would be one of the premeire failings of this area's road system. On average, I experience the gristle of road rage daily! &%*()&*%^ That's what I think about most of the people on the road. LEARN TO DRIVE.

Hey, peace out my loyal readers (all one of you) and relax...

The Grandfather Classic

Like your 3-series? Cute bimmer, it's true. I owned a '92 3 series, but I also currently own a bucket o' bolts called the BMW 2002. Mine is the 1975 version.

What a car. I bough this my senior year of high school from a man who bought the car new in 1975, and then kept it. He kept it until 2002, when he got a cool keychain from BMW which I promptly lost. If you search for M2002's, you can find some people who have added M3 engines to their 2002 for a crazy cornering and straight car. 2002's are known for their cornering. But, a M2002 is known for beating 80's M3's not just in the corners but also in the straight lines.

My 2002 doesn't have this modification. What it does have is a mated 5 spd transmission, 4 port exhaust racing pipe, two barrel carbeurator and a huge oil leak. It loves to leak oil! Oh, and it loves to overheat. But it is loud, and it isn't slow, and it is stable. I got pulled over doing 90 mph in this little car once. The cop was nice and gave me a 69. I think that was to save him a trip to jail and the impound.

What's more? A stereo. The previous owner added in a radio that works (a must for the 2002), and one summer in college I decided to add an amp and subwoofer to my cramped 2002, making it a 3 seater with a subwoofer behind the driver's side and an amp under the rear seat. Now, the car is loud on the outside and the inside. I'm not sure if anyone can't hear me coming in this ride.

2002 owners, unite! You can mod your grandfather sports sedan just like modding your civic or modern 3-series. These pieces of history go cheap too! Worth a buy, but not worth it as a primary drive. Enjoy!

Cars

18 days and I'm hitched. That's right. I'm darn excited.

I want to do things right. I want to provide for my fiance, and work hard so that she can be happy, and I want to make her happy :) Good stuff right.

So I graduate in like 6 months from school, and then I'll be getting a job. My plans are to get a good job, so let's leave that malarky alone for a while.

Lets talk about Cars. After I graduate, its my goal to replace my wife's car and my own with newer nicer cars for us to drive. I'm hoping to afford 2 $30,000 cars, getting one for my wife first then one for myself sometime after that. Depending how much I earn, we might get both at one time. So now, here are some models to consider:

Mercedes-Benz E500
BMW 530
BMW X3
BMW X5
Lexus IS300 (No Longer Available New)
Audi S4 (Watch your speakers here folks!)
Acura TL

That's the list. I checked out the MB ML500, but I'm not sold yet on the outside of the car. But the dash and interior is really nice.

So there's the breakdown, eight cars to choose from for the both of us. So the TL was the first choice a while ago, and still ranks up there because of the Honda Reliability Reputation, but since its only a front-drive, I'm looking more and more elsewhere. Test-driving is fun, but impractical. I really need to do just that over the next year or so.

Anyways, in doing this I have some time-tested wisdom from my own car experiences to relate.

Always go for a warranty. Certified-Used is good for some of the premium makes, but otherwise you should shop for a place that will give you both a good price and a good warranty on the car you buy. Otherwise, you could be buying a problem and throw all your money into it when you could have taken the extra time to find a place with better coverage. Carmax is notably good with the warranty aspect. However, their value-max warranty is less than stellar. If you are buying an older car, expect to lose money in repairs.

Capitalize on depreciation. This way, you can buy cars that are near new and with lower miles, but for a much lower price than brand-new. Many of these cars still have the original factory warranty still applicable to the car you buy, which comes in handy. Some cars, like Hondas do not depreciate the standard value after a year or two. Take this to stand for perceived reliability. In these cases, get the car with the most options. Often times the used models all cost a certain price based upon age and miles only. Therefore, some high ticket options might not factor into the used-car price and you get them for free compared to a used car without the options. BMW's and Mercedes are especially suspect to depreciation. Get one that is approx two years old and you will still get a factory warranty and modern quality, but you'll pay a much discounted price over factory.

Private party and older models are recipes for disaster. Expect to pay more money for repairs and to have more repairs. Furthermore, don't expect any warranty implied or actual. If you must buy older because of a limited budget, buy a car that has stellar reliability ratings and comes in large volumes. The more popular a car, the cheaper parts for it. So old BMW's and Benzes look nice, but don't buy them unless you already have another reliable car and the means to do the work required on these high-maintenance cars.

Buying new on a small budget is bad. This also goes along with buying American cars. If you have a small budget, get a used car guide, read some reliability ratings and try to find a RELIABLE car that has depreciated within your budget. Furthermore, debt is not always bad when it comes to cars, but there should be a balance. Figure out how much of a payment you can afford a month and how much you have for a down payment, and shop within that range. Otherwise, you may always be stuck trying to pay for a car in cash or with too-large payments, and you won't be able to advance with your personal finances or your car choices.

That's really all I have to say on that subject for now. If you want to know my personal preference, I want an Audi S4 2004 or newer. Then I get a nice v8 in a smaller car. My fiance wants one of the BMW's. I'm not sure which she prefers, but I think those are the most favored by her.

The Bell Tolls for None

Friday, it is? Yes, Friday it is!!!

Please, should you feel compelled to drink or covort this weekend, choose well. When you go to the bar and your mind reaches out to the miller on tap, hold out for a bottle of guinness, or a nice dark porter. Please, people, lets show some variety and taste in your choice of Alcohol. If you go to the liquor store, try and think before you go so you know what to buy.

Friday nights are the times to show off your class and style. If you want to take home the petite, put away the 'weiser.

Now remember, Kiddies the five rules of going out for the ladies:

1) Dress up! Wear dress shoes. If you don't have them, go to an outlet store and get a pair on the cheap. Stupid Kahkis? Not the way to go. Get something with some shine, some class, not something that is made for working on cars with. Striped shirts are nice, but more importantly make sure you pick the right shirt for your pants.

2) Black belt? Black shoes! Brown belt? Brown shoes! Black Pants? Black Shoes! Please, people do not mix these two colors!

3) Shave, cut your fingernails, comb your hair. If you forgot to shower this morning then shower after work so that you aren't a big greaseball.

4) If you ate lunch and it had any odor to it, pack the gum and mints! Onion breath means goig home alone tonight.

5) If you get a drink, and you haven't eaten yet, drink it slowly. The faster you drink your alcohol, the higher your BAC peaks. Take your time, patience is a virtue and it helps between the sheets too!

Finally Fellas, if you can't take the first or second, or even third girl home don't beg. Just loosen your belt, let the flab hang, and catch the metro home for a nice night with some 'weiser. That's right, I know you might go classy out of the pad, but once behind closed doors, you're the modern day Homer. Peace out fellas!

Lunch-time on the Farm

Yup, Lunch time folks.

So Huddle around the microwave as you watch your lean-cuisine meal cook itself all in under the time it takes to walk back to your office. Ehh, its a beautiful day to be alive, right? We like to keep you posted, here at CSH so that you don't have to go look or think for yourself. On a sad note, if you are considering investment now that the economy is surging, Don't. Wait until a slump or recession and then take your dollar into the market. Right now, you might find that you lose all your money in the next few months. (prediction # 1)

With that off my chest, and my seafood delight in the 'wave, here I present to you a personal question. For the last 2 to 3 weeks, twice a day, I've received a phone call from a specific number that does not answer when I pick up. Not only this, but it never leaves a message and if I call back the number is actually disconnected. This is starting to agitate me fervently. Any thoughts people? I tried lookig the number up and got nowhere. Apparently the number is in provider limbo, being between Verizon and some other carrier. Verizon my Verizon! Why couldn't you just peacefully let me transfer to Cingular? Why? The Cell-Phone Gods must be crazy.

The career of choice (for me) is finance. When you've got a philosophy degree, the prudent thing is to study and research and read your a double scribble (props to Vince Poska for pointing out the usefullness of that phrase to Chris Glenn in High School) off in the hopes that you will gain ground against your poor educational choices. So while half of my ipod has Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, and the Who, the other half is full of finance and business podcasts. I'm trying to find out just how the finance world ticks; prepare myself for a takeover; climb to the top as soon as I can. It's all in the day's work for a loving Husband (future), thats what I tell myself. Post Blog lunch agenda: Read Pter Lynch's great books some more.

In relevant news, some of you are actually intelligent enough to pass on to yourself the free advertising I've posted in the form of links for other blogs that I find informative. And now you ask yourself: why should I, a hapless reader, read your blog? And now the pitch. For a limited time only, you can read this blog and comment, and probably noone else will. Of course, I don't use it hardly, and I'm thinking I want a place to say what I'm going to, or have said already where I can take up screenspace and not really care that it annoys you, the reader.

So here at the CSH research institute (Keep Sh*t Happening) we care to point out the faults of both dominant forces here in the United States. So to keep with our standards, we have two stories of interest to you, our prized audience this day.

Folks, the talking heads out there want to confuse and blind you, and here is a prime example. Late last week, talk show host Rush Limbaugh was taken in on chrages of drug trafficing and prescription fraud, as he had in his possesion a large quantity of prescription painkillers. (Rush's Folly) Of course, Rush has acted to mitigate the public perception of him as a pill-popping addict because he has "gotten off" the charges. Funny, I thought that we considered Moussaoui to be "getting off' since instead of the chair, or the nasty gas he gets to spend 23 hours of every day of the rest of his life 40 feet below ground in a 6 foot cell in Colorado. Yet all the radio chatter has focused on the guy who got life in leiu of the chair. Rush has agreed to de-facto probation and will attend rehabilitaion efforts, but still pleads that he is completely innocent. Rather than an investigation into the lawfulness of Rush's prescription activity, it would seem that he believes this investigation is a scheme of the devilish liberals of America. For now, I won't discuss the problems with his anti-liberal and pro-America ideology. Lets just say that if America represents freedom, liberals aren't the enemy any more than extreme conservatives are.

But of course, here at CSH, we cannot simply leave these corruption ripples go without considering the alternative. Democratic representative, Patrick Kennedy was involved in a Car Crash near the Capitol in DC. According to Kennedy, he had just taken some prescription nausea medicine and thought he had to be at the capitol to vote (at 2 in the morning) for something. As he attempted to do this, his senses impeded, as did some stationary objects. The cops merely took him home, dismissing any thoughts of his possible intoxication or illicit drug use that could have caused the accident. Now, Patrick holds that he had not taken any Alcohol prior to driving, but he does have a history with illicit drugs, so the proverbial eyebrow is justified in being raised.

What you see here is not reason to disbelieve that the republicans in power have a problem with corruption, nor do you have reason to believe that the Democratic party is wholsome in its desire to fight conservative corruption. This morning, I was introduced to the Kennedy story with the conception that this somehow clears conservatives of corruption woes. Not So, says my loyal readership. Bet your bottom, we'll be on the scene sniffing out disloyalties and cover-ups wherever we go, whether we ride the donkey or the elephant into town.

The CSH institute would love to present more information at this time, but we are still recovering from the Cinco de Mayo festival held at the white house yesterday, and will be nursing our hangovers until its time to go out again tonight for the real cinco de mayo.

WoooHooo!
